How To Succeed In Marketing
This week I spent some time researching marketing and its effects as well as its importance in the business world. What I found is that without marketing, a company has no driving force to get things moving. Marketing is one of the most important aspects of commerce. It’s a job that can be very rewarding and exciting. But like any career, there are character traits that are imperative to a good marketing agent. Here are 5 of the most important traits based off my own research and opinions.
1 - Intelligence
While any career or job role will require a certain level of intelligence. Marketing has different requirements in this arena. Not only do you need a high standard IQ, you’ll also need to fare well in EQ. This is your emotional intelligence quotient, a measurement of how well you understand the inner workings of human emotions and the effects they have on our decisions. This is important because marketing professionals often need to know how their marketing campaign will affect the people who see it. This is important in anything from a presidential ad campaign, to a commercial for a car insurance company. Understanding the effect it will have on the thoughts and emotions of your intended audience is crucial for success.
2 - Organizational skills
In an interview with marketing professional Micheal McMahon, I asked him to give me a few examples of what it takes to be successful in this role. He mentioned that it's important to conduct extensive research and document all your findings. As well as the importance of coming up with a detailed plan for everything you're doing. In order to do this successfully, you need to be good at organizing your work. It’s important to keep everything you’ve learned well documented and easy to find. It’s a very simple concept, but one that is imperative to success in marketing.
3 - Good focus
Because this role consists of so much research and careful planning, it’s important to maintain focus on the task at hand. A good marketing campaign is planned out to the smallest detail. In order to do this successfully you need a well trained and very focused team working to accomplish your goal.
4 - Tech savvy
While I wouldn’t say you have to be a tech guru to work a marketing position, you are dealing with a lot of social media outreach, and web design. Because of this, it’s important to have a good understanding of how to operate different social media platforms, and how to reach your target audience using the internet, radio, or TV. So while it isn’t the most important part of this role, it's helpful to know what you're doing in the tech arena.
5 - Creativity
Because marketing revolves so much around finding new ways to spread the name of your company and build up social rapport for your brand. You have to find creative approaches to advertising. If you want a successful marketing campaign, you have to be able to think outside the box and come up with new ideas. This makes having a creative outlook very important to being a good marketer.
While each one of these traits are simple, their use in marketing is taken further than in most other job roles. Making each one of them very important to this job as a whole.
